About Me

Am Sammy Kimani John born in 1967 in Nakuru. Am married with five school going children. Am the bread winner; my wife being unemployed. Am educated upto college level and currently working as teacher at Vanessa grant girls, a private secondary school in Rongai Nakuru. I have taught for almost twenty years now and have not made much personal development due to the fact of low pay, dependence by my aging mother and meager savings, though I believe I have been a blessing to many students that I have taught. I started small scale vegetable farming to supplement my income in 2006.This is after realizing that relying on salary alone to bring up five children and educate them is almost impossible. I have struggled against many challenges to succeed in farming as a business venture.
I started with a small loan of Kenya shs. 20000 and planted tomatoes in a one acre rented plot under farrow irrigation. The proceeds were not high due to a low harvest and poor market price but I did break even. I re-invested about 15000 shillings in the same plot and planted butternuts and green pepper. The proceeds this time were better and encouraging. I rented a bigger plot of two and a half acres where I have continued mixed vegetable farming to date, mostly under farrow irrigation. Am able to pay school fees, feed and clothe my family from the sale of my harvest. Am also able to help my aging mother to pay school fees and take care of her grandchildren left in her care by a departed brother and sister. With your generous help, am hoping to expand my project to be able to meet these financial obligations faithfully and with ease and improve my family’s wellbeing and save them from the jaws of poverty that is always threatening and also continue assisting my community with supplies of green vegetables especially during the dry season. God bless!

My Business

My business is farming. I plant vegetables which include kales, tomatoes, green pepper, onions, butternuts etc. I do this in a two-and a half rented acre plot. The renting fee per acre is Kenya shillings 5,000 per year amounting to 12,500 per year. I also use three casual labourers whom I pay Ksh 200 per day amounting to Ksh 15600 per month. I spend approximately Ksh 15000 every month on farm inputs e.g. fertilizers and chemicals. My income from the project is about Ksh 10000 less all the expenditures. This amount to approximately Ksh. 120,000 per year.
The demand for the vegetables is high from the local community and neighboring schools especially during the dry season which am able to supply because am able to irrigate my farm from the nearby river.
The risks in this business include unexpected diseases and unpredicted climatic condition especially frost and flooding which leads to unexpected expenditure which in most times am unable to meet. Another risk is the poor market prizes due to oversupply. I use the income from my business to pay fees, feed and clothe my family and also assists my mother to meet her financial demands which include paying school fees for orphaned children left by departed brother and sister. The remaining is ploughed back to my business.

Loan Proposal

I will use the loan for horticulture farming under irrigation on my two acre rented farm. my farm is near a river. Am planning to grow tomatoes on one acre, butternuts on half an acre and pepper on the other half- renting and ploughing the shamba Ksh 10,000 , buying tomato , butternuts and pepper seeds and fertiliser Ksh 15000. chemicals eg pesticide and herbicides Ksh 5000, fuel for irrigation and labour Ksh10000.

Dear lenders, am truthfully sorry for missing out on repayment, be sure that very soon I will catch up with my repayment schedule. I have gone through challenges with money, a controversy with my farm landlord delaying planting and then the motobike I bought was stolen but all that has not deterred my desire to succeed. I have done all I could to make sure that I have crops in the field after solving rent issue and in about a month God willing I start harvesting. Yes expect me to payback. Most sorry for defaulting.
many thanks for your continued support!

Since I encountered the problem of finance due a sick member of the family, my expected planting of crops and harvesting have since been affected by at least two months before I start harvesting and selling in order to repay regularly. Right now am expecting to start harvesting in two months time then I will gladly be able to continue repaying.

sorry for this! two things happened that caused this. One a son of mine has been admitted for a degree course in university and government financial assistance has delayed forcing me to pay all the cost of accommodation and tuition for this semester. Two, i have a sister who is single and has been admitted to hospital and family members including me are raising money for her weekly medical bill

Dear Zidisha community, I wish to register my deep appreciation of the new development going on in terms of membership and loaning, thank you Julia and your team.anything aimed at strengthening and creating trust between lenders and borrower should always be welcome. As I speak I now have a brand new Motorbike that I use to travel to my shamba and I gives me alot of pleasure to know that I can now easily manage and plan in to the future with confidence that I can access funding with a community that cares for my business. I have no fear that should a problem arise my property wil not be crudely attached. Zidisha can listen, reschedule, has a platform to keep lenders and borrowers in touch, it is more human than any microfinance in existence. My development remain and will always be entrusted to Zidisha!

Dear lenders, I have changed my offered interest to 10%. This is what i had intended in the first place but had not realised how the addition of 5% borrowers fee is done. Sorry for that.I realise that to grow my business using this loan needs the best practice and a competitive edge that is also attractive to you lenders. Thank you and sorry once again!

Thank you Sparkle and pentatoniscale for your encouraging words. It is true that somethings we do in life is not always for money, I believe farming for me is also a hobby and yes my children gain a lot in experience. I also take pride in giving them fresh veges from my shamba.

Hi, Sammy, I am a music teacher in Japan. I have a very small garden but it has several fruit trees, and I just harvested a lot of loquats and soon some figs, kumquats and gooseberries. There are not enough to sell but they are free fruit for me! Also I grow them pesticide-free. I hope your farm does well.

Hi, Sammy. I hope you get all your funding soon! My father was a high school science teacher. My parents had seven children. My dad always took extra jobs on weekends and in the summer to make ends meet. We raised all of our own vegetables, and canned the extras to eat all winter. My mom cooked all of our food. Now I have a professional job but still try to raise as many vegetables and herbs as I can. I am sure your children are learning many wonderful lessons from you. Best regards.

    Dear Zidisha Community,
receive my greetings because am always delighted to be one of you! Farming is going on well here in Rongai Nakuru, the maize and beans are good. I have noe acre of maize and beans also which I planted after harvesting the butternuts. Am planning for weeding and top dressing. Am also planning to plant tomatoes in one and half acre when the rainfall decreases around the month of august. I have a challenge in transport to and from the shamba. In due course I will seek assistance in this areas because with the sale of the remaining bunch of butternuts I was able to fully repay my first loan. God bless you all.

HI Lenders and entire zidisha community,
Its a pleasure communicating to you to keep you in touch with my project. In deed I have noted the encouraging development on loan requirement and am happy because apart from the commitment it also builds a strong membership base with apportunity for large loans and more growth.
I harvested my butternuts the past three weeks and stored them to await better market prices though am still selling in small amounts so as to keep honouring my loan repayment and also continue with other activities in the farm, since the rain sesson is on here and preparing land for planting maize is underway. Iam also selling green pepper now.
Without doubt, the loan was very helpful and I look forward to complete repayment and then seek more support. God bless you all.
