About Me

I am a mother of one, a son who is currently in the Uiversity pursuing electrical engineering.I live in Gatia Village which is a few metres away from Don Bosco Catholic Church. My home is located behind the animal slaughter house.
I am a Groceries seller outside Don Bosco Catholic Church in Makuyu, Murang'a South District, Murang'a County, Central Province.
I reached form four (up to high school). This was because when I was being brought up, girl child education wasn't that important as many of us were supposed to be at home being taught by our parents how to bring up a family in the right way. Only the boy child had the right to formal education unlike now that times have changed.
I started my business in 2009. The main reason that led me to do so was my son's education as the farm produce couldn't cater much on his education. University education in Kenya is rather expensive especially the technical courses. Luckily, my son was admitted through the Joint Admissions Board which isn't as expensive in comparison to the parallel programmes. I had to have extra income to ensure that my son sails through his education and make a living for himself.
I purchase fruits like oranges, mangoes, avocados to sell to students from Makuyu Primary School and Don Bosco Schools (Secondary and Technical College). I also sell them sugar cane and some packed ready to drink juice together with some biscuits.

My Business

My business is based outside Makuyu Don Bosco Catholic Church. My customers are mostly students from Makuyu Primary School and Don Bosco Schools (Secondary and Technical College).
I normally sell to them oranges, mangoes, avocados and sugar cane. Also inclusive are ready to drink juice and biscuits.
Students being my main customers normally come to my stand during break time to purchase the fruits. They mostly prefer my stand since I normally encourage them to work hard for them to join the university like my son. Also, I sell to them fresh fruits at a very reasonable price.
My business is profitable since with at least every purchase of a fruit, I gain 50% profit. I normally get them from the neighboring market in Makuyu town where its relatively cheaper. Also, from my small piece of land hence lowering the production cost.
The major set back the business faces is when the students are on holiday since they form a bigger percentage of my customer base. Also during the rainy season, my stand gets ruptured by rain at times.
In a month, I make a profit of Ksh. 6000 and I believe with the help of Zidisha, I will be able to increase my profit margins and see my son through his university education with ease..

Loan Proposal

I will use the loan to add stock to my business.
I will use Ksh. 25,000 to purchase oranges, pineapples, water mellons, sweet mellons, bananas. These fruits form my stock base as students come to my stand during break time and lunch time.

I will use Ksh. 10,000 to erect a stand where my customers will be relaxing as they partake the fruits. The cash will be used to purchase timber, nails, iron sheets.

The remain Ksh. 5000, I will use to purchase pioneer maize seeds to plant end September and early October. Pioneer Maize seeds are drought resistant and yield very high.

Hi Virginia, It has been 45 days since you mentioned you were to commence repayment immediately. You received your loan over 11 months ago and you haven't made one payment. In December 2013 you wrote that in November you had recorded more sales than ever and bought a money maker pump. Because of what you wrote last year, I am baffled as to why you haven't made any payments. I would appreciate an explanation.

      Dear Mossuto,
I am to commence repayment immediately.
I am sorry for any inconveniences but I will start even offsetting the total amount in arrears.
It's incorrect to call me a thief yet you didn't know what happened exactly but to ease everything up, let me just repay. That was uncalled.
I will send to you by end of this month the Mpesa repayment.
      Thank you.

    Hello Virginia,
I was wondering the same as Alexandra. It has been 2 1/2 months since your initial reschedule. I'm frankly surprised at your delay, given Paul's frequent involvement in Zidisha.
    Respectfully,
    marvin

    Dear Lenders,
I am happy to let you know of the progress my business and farm has taken so far.
I already build a shad and it now holds more stock. I have recorded more sales than ever before out of the stock I managed to add through Zidisha's loan.
In the month of November when students were doing their final and end of year exams, I recorded most sales due to the fact that many students opted to take fruits instead of heavy lunch due to the exams.
Apart from that, there were many occasions in Don Bosco School grounds that attracted large crowds, hence a larger market.
In my farm, I have managed to add more workers, hence creating employment in the area. It was planting season and indeed I can't wait for the harvesting period. I bought the seeds, courtesy of the loan granted by Zidisha.
Also, as Paul posted, I bought a money maker pump. This was very important especially during planting to water the seeds/seedlings.

Basically I don't know what I could have done if it wasn't for your help.
    I am really grateful.
In a few days time, I will commence my repayment.
    Thanks.

    Dear Lenders,
I visited Virginia today and indeed her pump is really really doing her good. I took some pictures that am set to upload here latest by tomorrow.
I also reminded her to repay her loan on time to enjoy the good relationship between her and you.
Incase of any difficulty, she should reschedule and inform you the reason for that.
Also, she should constantly communicate to you.
She assured me to do that

    Dear Lenders,
I recently made a purchase for the money maker pump. This costed me Ksh. 14,000. This is a manual pump that one uses only his legs to pump water with. Its very effective and since in my farm there is water available in the bore hole which is a few metres deep, I choose to use it unlike the petrol powered pump which is rather proving to be expensive due to the escalating fuel prices here in Kenya.
I will commence my repayment very soon.
I am sorry for the inconvinience. Let me post to you its image at my farm

I wonder how you will be able to repay a much larger loan, when you had to reschedulee a small loan of $ 100 ?

    • Virginia    Sep 17, 2013

      Hi Sverre,
I reshcheduled the loan to clinch the 3 month period so as to progress to the next loan plus I had received a cheque that couldnt have matured by the set date I was to repay my loan.
Also, according to Zidisha policy, I'd rather reschedule than delay in payment without making an appropriate reason.
Basically, now I am back in business as students were on holiday and now they are on session. Also, I have diversified my business to also on the farm.

Virginia, you "earned" a credit for a larger loan only because of posting text..
I hope that you are able to handle a larger loan. You were behind on the first small loan but paid it back with a lump sum to obtain the larger loan.
I'm not sure that using your son as a VM carries much weight.

I have decided to change the repayment schedule because my son just got back to school whereby I had to dig deeper in my pockets to pay for his final year in school.
He is in fifth year, pursuing electrical engineering.
On Monday this week, he reported to school actually he got to finally choose his specialisation in power systems.
I hope you will accept my proposal

    MUSHROOM PRODUCTION
Mushroom production is currently valued at KSh 340 million. Large scale producers account for over 95% all over Kenya most of which is button. Shitake, though not common in Kenya, is globally rated second after button. Oyster mushroom production is readily picking up because it is easy to grow, has higher yields and has more nutritional value than button. Due to its lower cost of production and high yielding capacity it presents a good opportunity for small to middle scale farmers.
Mushroom industry in Kenya has a well established private sector investment with large scale commercial farms like Agridutt Ltd, Rift valley mushrooms, online mushrooms, Devani and Kanchan mushrooms. Key exporting companies do not have out growers.
Kenya produces 500 tons per annum (of which 476 tons being button) against an annual demand of 1200 tons both in hotels and home consumption.Mushroom breeds by utilizing nutrients from the substrate through colonizing the substrate and forms pinheads which then develop into fruit bodies (mushroom).Mushroom breeding requires right type of spawn (mushroom seeds) i.e. correct age and vibrant growing, substrate and right environment for maximum productivity.
The seeds (spawns) are available in four types of carrier materials namely:
Grain spawn, Sawdust spawn, Plug spawn and Liquid spawn.
Production varies depending on various factors e.g. economic capacity and climatic conditions. Some of the production methods include:-Trays, logs, Bags, bottles, Shelf-frame (shelve with bags), Wall mat and saw dust blocks.
Bag (neck and tie method) cultivation is commonly used.
    Importance of Mushroom Cultivation:
    The Importance of Mushroom Cultivation

    • Medicinal value
    • Consumption of mushrooms slows down the spread and effect of cancer, heart disease, HIV/AIDS (by boosting immune system).
    • Income generation and
    • Employment creation.
    Advantages of Mushroom Growing
    • Use of idle structures,
    • Involvement of small initial capital,
    • Possible production all the year round
    • Use of Agricultural waste as substrate- mostly waste materials from farms, plantations or factories.
    • Is a Biodegrader hence environmental con-server.
    Consumption benefits of mushrooms.

    • Has Vit.C, cynocobalimin (Vit,B12) content found only in animal products
    • Low in sodium ideal for people with heart and kidney ointments.
    • Have iron, calcium, potassium, phosphorus and folic acid.
    Challenges in Mushroom Growing
    • Lack of skills on mushroom production
    • Spawn is expensive and quality not guaranteed

    Bee Keeping
    • Beekeeping in Kenya has been practiced over the years.
    • However only 20% of the country’s honey production potential (estimated at 100,000 metric tonnes) has been tapped.
    • 80% of Kenya consists of arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) which have high potential in production of honey and apicultural activity is a major occupation in these areas due to the abundance of bee flora.
    • Non ASAL regions also practice beekeeping
    • Modern beekeeping in Kenya started towards the end of 1960s and has since become an important enterprise in the livestock sub-sector.
    • 80% of the honey comes from the traditional log hive.
    • However, a reasonable amount of hive products is obtained from Kenya Top Bar and Langstroth hives
    Need for Bee-keeping
    • Bee farming is a rewarding and enjoyable occupation with many benefits. It has a number of advantages over other farm enterprises;
    • Requires little land (50 colonies require a ¼ acre ) which does not have to be fertile
    • Honey is a source of non-perishable food
    • Capital investment is low compared to other farm enterprises
    • Beekeeping or bee farming is cheap and relatively not competitive to other Agricultural enterprises i.e. does not compete for resources
    • Labour required is low.
    • Many products can be obtained which are great source of income i.e. honey, beeswax, pollen, propolis, bee venom, royal jelly, bee colonies, bee brood, queen bees, and package bees.
    • Encourages environmental conservation.
    • Bees are good pollinators of plants, trees, fruits and crops, thus playing a big role in bio-diversity and improvement of crop yields
    • The therapeutic value of most hive products provide remedy for a number of ailments (Apitherapy)
MAIN CHALLENGES IN PRODUCTION OF HONEY
    • The farmers lack adequate skills on managing bees and handling hive products.
    • Inadequate training for both farmers and extension staff.
    • Limited access to appropriate beekeeping equipment.
    • An underdeveloped marketing system of hive products both locally and internationally due to problems of quality and marketing organisations.
    • Lack of adequate and intense research on of the existing beekeeping technologies, equipment, honey bee and product utilisation.
    • Low prioritization of beekeeping in relation to other enterprises in the wider Agricultural sector.
    POLICY ON APICULTURE
    • The current policy on Apiculture is broadly to develop a modern beekeeping industry in the country to provide additional income to rural households.
    • The Policy paper on apiculture is still on the draft proposal stage
