About Me

I come from kisii South Mugirango. i come from a family of 12. I have a diploma in Huma Resource Managementfrom univerity of nairobi, i help at our church. i started a business after looking for a job in along time till i decided to be self employed. am happy because as my business grows i will be able also to employ one or two youths who are not employed. I come from kisii south mugirango but current staying in kisii town daraja mbili near jaramogi oginga odinga university. Kisii is well known of an agricultural region. we are based on the western kenya in kisii county former nyanza province.

My Business

I have a cyber cafe that is based in kisii town. my cyber is of 8 computers. i do photocopying, binding, printing, and planning to invest the loan on the business for want to do movie selling too. need to buy the machine to help in movie duplicating. I do provide good services and that is to why my customers like my place. In the next 1 year i would like to see the business grown to a level that it is covering printing and computing services in kisii town. I would love to over quality and afodable services to customers within our region. so that they dont need to go out to look for the same service.

Loan Proposal

I will use the loan to buy two computer to add to my cyber business. I would have loved to buy 4 more computers to add to my business but the amount cant allow that so i opt to buy two as it will help is the services that i give to my customers. People come and wait for others to finish so that they can use the computers. so by adding more computers i will be able to serve more people at a short period of time.

    Dear all,

I met Job Nyachwaya in the middle of Kisii last thursday. We each took a bodaboda (motorcycle taxi) through the busy streets of Kisii, where cars, people, bodabodas, and bicycles were all trying to get to their destination as quickly as possible. After a short ride we arrived at the location of one of his many businesses. He has employed one of his friends, who happily greeted me upon entry. After a short stay, Job and I were trying to find a quiet café to sit and talk, but we soon realized that it would be difficult and settled for a small kiosk right next to the street, not quiet, but at least we could sit.

“So why did you start a movie shop?” I asked him as soon as we sat down. “Well, it did not start with a movie shop.” He begins. After going to bible school (the wish of his father) and doing a couple of courses in computer science, Job decided to pursue a degree in Human Resource Management, which he successfully finished in 2010. Like many other young graduates in Kenya he found it impossible to find a stable and secure job upon graduation. He did a few small jobs here and there, but nothing proved to last. After getting tired and annoyed of all the disappointments he opened a cybercafé with his savings and a bit of support from his dad. In the beginning it went really well. There was high demand for his services and so money was flowing in. After a while however, two of his computers broke down causing a big drop in his earnings as customers were dissatisfied with his services and went to other cafés. With his second Zidisha loan he managed to buy two new and reliable computers, which brought his customers back and boosted his revenues (from 15 to 60 USD a day). Soon after competitors started copying his idea and opened cybercafés close to his, resulting in fewer customers. In addition, due to greater demand for the rooms, the rent for his stall also increased. Together these events crushed his profits.

A good friend of Job went to the US, leaving his car under Jobs supervision. Job started using it as a taxi and discovered that it was very profitable. Thus, when the friend came back and demanded his car, Job decided to buy one of his own. He has now two people employed, who drive on shifts, and it has proven to be consistently profitable.

With the money he got from selling his cybercafé, though he only sold two of his eight computers, he opened the business I visited, a movie shop. It is located slightly outside Kisii center, right next to the university. “That was the key” Job tells me. Being located right next to the university, making it convenient to pass by after class, gave him a ready market leading consistent earnings.

Job experienced the importance of connections when a friend, he got to know through doing small jobs, at one point came up to him and informed him about an available sales position with Solar Delight, a big solar light company. After a few interviews he got the job and is now officially employed as a sales person. Through his two businesses and his position as a sales person he gets an approximate average salary of 685 USD a month, “however, it varies a lot, in a good month the car alone could bring in 60.000 Kenyan shillings (685 USD)” Job says. Despite this great leap, Job is not yet satisfied. With his six computers remaining from his former cyber he is now currently opening another one in Nyamira, a town close to Kisii. The rent here is lower and there a few other cybercafés, thus he hopes it will become more profitable.

I am sitting there, almost with an open mouth, trying to keep track of all the things he keeps doing, however, he still is not done. “I really like community work” he says, and tells me how he and his family therefore took up two orphans to their home. Some of his profits are always being sent there to support the two children. His love for community work is also the reason why he took the opportunity to become a Volunteer Mentor (a client who volunteers to help other clients), which both requires time and effort.

“How do you keep track of everything?” I ask him. “My studies gave me a lot of skills, which I keep on using now. And apart from that, I don’t know. I just, do.” He answers with a smile.
