About Me

Am Grace Nyambura Mungai , a 33 years old lady. I was born in Kipipiri District. I started my primary school in 1986 at Mahindu Primary school. I sat for my KCPE in the year 1994. I later joined Wanjohi secondary School in 1995. I finished high school in 1998. After my high school I could not immediately join College as my mother who was educating me could not afford it. However two years later, I was blessed and joined Mwangaza College, in Nakuru where I pursued my Diploma in Catering.

I finished in 2004. I was employed in one of the five star hotels in Nakuru known as Merica Hotel. I worked for two years in this hotel. I got employed by Alpha Dairys Based in Nairobi. However with my new capacity as a sales lady with the company they stationed me in Nakuru. In this capacity as a sales lady, I gained a lot experiences which enabled me to think about starting my own business. I resigned and started my own business of selling Ice – cream and yoghurt from the same company Alpha Dairys under my shop called Ice – cream parlour located in Highway towers in Nakuru Town.

The Alpha Dairys as part of its incentives to encourage business people to sell their products gave me two freezers and one scooping machine. These two, assisted me to start well. I had saved some money which I used to buy three (3) tables and twelve (12) seats. After some time I was able to stock my shop with all the flavours in order to meet customers demand. Apart fo the ice – creams I also do milk – shakes, fruit – shakes and sundaes.

After for months of business, I realised that I needed a cappuccino machine (coffee) because I realised that the sale of ice – creams went down during wet seasons. I was able to do this from my savings. The coffee sold from my shop boost sales and supplements income.

With my training in Catering I have been slowly been turning to baking of cakes used in Birthday parties, weddings and small pieces sold in my shop. Am planning to go into field work that will involve organising weddings, visiting schools; when there some activities like visiting day and agricultural trade fare. In order to do this I will need to buy a taylor dispenser machine and a candy floss.

Am a mother of two lovely children aged 13yrs and 6yrs respectively. I support my family from proceeds from this business

My Business

I started my own business of selling Ice – cream and yoghurt made by Alpha Dairys under my shop called Ice – cream parlour located in Highway towers in Nakuru Town. I also sell Coffee in order to supplement my income during the wet seasons. As I had indicated earlier I also do some baking which is also good for my business. The two complement one another. From the two; ice cream shop and baking am able to make a profit of average kshs 1,600 per day after I minus all the cost used to purchase Ice – cream from Alpha Dairys and other cost that emanate from my baking side job. This amounts to Kshs 48, 000 per month.

From this amount I pay the following; The shop’s rent at Kshs 6,000 per month, Single Business permit at Kshs 500 per month (Translates to Kshs 6, 000 per year), Salaries of my two employees at Kshs 7, 000 per employee totalling to Kshs 14, 000 per month, garbage disposal levy of Kshs 500 per month, Hotel & food allied society levy of Kshs 200 per month (translating to 2400 per month), Electricity bills of Kshs 2,000 and miscellaneous expenses of 5, 000 per month.

This totals to Kshs 28,200. After I have paid for these expenses am left with Kshs 19,800.
