About Me

I have a 10 year old boy called Wycliff, he's in class 4, and a 5 month baby girl called Ivana. I live with them in Tena estate in Umoja, where my son attends a private school. I have a diploma in Business Administration and this helps me so much in managing my business. I am very hard working, honest, focused and God-fearing. I had planned to start a business for a long time, and finally pursued my passion and made it happen. I am now looking to expand, by importing the items myself in order to get more clients and profit. I use my earnings to support my children, and sometimes my brothers who are not yet stable. I pay school fees for my son, pay my bills and save the rest. I'm saving up in order to buy land where I can build my house and stop renting property. Then I can use that money to do other constructive things in life. I am looking forward to achieving this dream.

My Business

My main business is in supplying electronics. I usually look for business in towns outside Nairobi as some people cannot travel into Nairobi for their electronics, and don't have to pay for delivery if it comes from me. Sometimes I face challenges where my orders are so large but I do not have the capital to buy enough stock in the capital, and thus I cannot meet demand. Generally, the returns are good, so with enough capital I will be able to grow very fast, and will be able to meet all of my customers demands.

Loan Proposal

I will use the loan to purchase the following phones ordered by my customers. I will buy a Samsung phone worth 12000 kshs (141$ ), a techno phone worth 8000 kshs ( 95 $ ) and a nokia phone worth 15000 kshs (177 $ ). As soon as the phones are delivered and get paid and will invest this into the business. I am very grateful to the Zidisha team and all the lenders. May God bless you all. This loan will positively change my life as I will be able to meet my customers demands, and therefore not struggle to pay my bills and to take care for my children. I urge you, my lenders, to help make my dreams come true. Thank you so much and may God bless you.

My Business

My business deals in supply of electronics.i usually look for orders in towns outside Nairobi where they find it far to leave there work closed to come and purchase the items in nairobi so most of them prefer to be supplied.they also prefer being supplied because they dont have to pay on deliverly so they can be left sell the items and pay at the agreed date.it is also hectic to look for this items because we just dont buy anywhere i have to move around compare the prices being offered and the quality in the market.so they also find it easier for them to get the items at their door step.the most challeges i get are sometimes i have orders but the capital isnt enough so it becomes difficult for me to supply.so i dont answer to some client because i know i can not meet the demand due to capital problem.but generally the returns are good,so with enough capital i can grow very fast, because i can be able to supply to all the orders

Doreen Mugambi grew up in the central Kenyan highlands town of Meru where she completed primary and secondary school. She then moved to the coastal city of Mombasa where she lived for four years while completing a Diploma in Business Administration and an internship at the Kenyan Port Authority. She subsequently moved to Nairobi and had various businesses including a clothes shop and then a gem stones store before moving into the electronics business several years ago.
Doreen supplies retail clients outside Nairobi with electronics items. She receives an order from a client, purchases the items, arranges the transport of the items to the client, invoices the client and receives payment, all usually within about one week.
On the day we met, Doreen was sourcing mobile phones for a client in Voi, in south eastern Kenya, and she met with various different wholesale suppliers and discussed options and prices before eventually selecting around fourteen handsets – some specified by the client and some the client has asked her to choose based on what is currently selling well. With some requested models out of stock, Doreen called her client to discuss options to ensure they were happy with her choices. The phones were then boxed up and Doreen took them to the transport company she uses where they were loaded on an overnight truck to be with the client by early the next morning.
Apart from mobile phones, Doreen is often asked to supply a wide variety of other electrical items such as televisions, fridges, stereos and cookers.
While the business is very profitable for Doreen the high cost of the items and large order sizes mean she can often only fill one order at a time until she receives payment. This is where Doreen’s Zidisha loans have really come in handy as they have allowed her to fill more and larger orders for her clients and she is currently fund raising for a new loan to allow her to increase her capital base even further.
Doreen is mother to ten year old Wycliff who is currently in Standard 4 and with his favourite subject being maths, hopes to be a pilot one day. Five month old Ivana has been a very cute addition to their family. Doreen is raising the children by herself for the most part as their father, Naftaly, works as a police officer in western Kenya.
Like any parent with a baby, it’s difficult for Doreen to combine work and motherhood, and we had to take a break from visiting suppliers so she could return to where her sister was minding her children nearby to breastfeed a hungry Ivana. Doreen’s mothering instincts extend even further and several times she held me back while we were crossing the road to stop me from overzealously stepping out into the busy central Nairobi traffic.
When she isn’t busy with her electronics supply business, Doreen also makes curtains and has even had a commission to supply a hotel/apartment building. She has just replaced her broken sewing machine as she has five orders she is about to fill.
In the longer term Doreen hopes to expand her electronics supply business to import items herself from places such as Dubai and China as this is a very profitable business in Kenya.
