My Story
My name is George Kiptoo and i love preserving the nature. Any activity involving tree planting and preserving the nature in my area and you will not miss me. Am from the forested area of Kaptagat Forest a reason why i have grown up loving trees. In the recent past however, an influx of illegal loggers and senseless felling down of trees with little respect for nature in terms of planting trees necessitated me to start a tree nursery to plant many different types of trees; both indigenous ones like Meru oak and the foreign ones like cypress and Pine. I was born 25 years ago, in a family of 5 boys and 3 girls. At the moment, i just wound up my college studies in Forestry and Natural resources and am planning to start a business of selling seedlings as a form of self employment and environmental preservation. Am a talented singer, i do play piano and i also love writing aside from helping in community work.
ABOUT THE BUSINESS
As i am done with my college education in forestry, am certain my knowledge will come in handy. In existence right now are just 3 nurseries which am selling tree seedlings in 1 of them for about $10 in total. i feel i need to add more for my income as well as the environment. My clients range from home owners wishing to plant trees for their homes to those who just buy the whole nursery for planting. They are demanding more trees but my budget cannot meet their requirements a reason why am seeking your funding.
Once funded, i will be able to expand on the land already allocated, plant more and therefore produce more trees.
MY BUDGET
My projected budget and outcomes are as follows:
from the allocated $150,
$60 will go to buying the tubes to plant the seedlings on, plus the manure to mix with the soils for healthy seedlings. I will also buy buckets to plant home flowers for home furnishings.
$30 for obtaining water pipes to the location. Water is available in plenty and only piping is necessary.
$20 for collecting different seeds and seedlings in the forest. i will hire personnel to help collect them with me in a day or two.
$20 will be used to ferry the manure and
the remaining will go to fencing the location.
COMPETITORS
My existing competitor is the forest nursery but the goodness is that mine is near to the main road than the forest one and that i will be offering both trees and flowers for sale as they do only sell trees. I will also ensure that i do publicize my business using posters and signposts beside the road.
REASONS WHY THE BUSINESS IS PROFITABLE
Reasons why i consider it a profitable business is that tree planting is emerging as a mandatory task for everyone, the government enacted a law requiring everyone to plant at least 5% of the land with trees but Kaptagat forest nursery cannot mmet all their needs thus mine will help more. Secondly, trees alike Eucalyptus take up to 10 years to mature and more people are planting them for money as a tree can fetch up to $50 when fully mature. Most people are looking for their seedlings and i sell 5 for $2 right now.
PROFITS, COSTS AND REVENUES
I did a research while in college and discovered that one can make up to $100 in just a week from this business.
If i can sell a minimum of a nursery in 2 days, then
a nursery has 500 seedlings, if
5 seedlings = $2
500 seedlings = $200
deducting on expenses like herbicides, water bills, salary etc, i will make a profit of even $100 while helping keep the environment livable now and in future. Repaying my funds will not be an issue given that right now am already doing this.
MY LOAN PROPOSAL
My business will major in providing tree seedlings to my community and thus my country at large. I will use the money to buy new tubes for my seedlings and manure for fertile soils, acquire pipes for watering the seedbeds and also get seeds in the forest to germinate then plant. The funds will go down as below:
$60 from the allocated $150 = polythene tubes to put the soils so that i can plant the seedlings, buy manure from my neighbours to mix with the soils for fertile soils and buying of new buckets to plant on the home furnishing flowers( those that can be placed on living rooms and receptions of offices).
$30 will be on water delivery to the nursery location. I will have to buy the plastic ones to connect to my home's water pipes.
as i will be expanding on my existing mini-nursery, i will use $20 to hire some people help me collect seeds in the forest. I will need indigenous ones as well as those of cypress, eucalyptus and pine.
i will have to ferry the manure and thus i will need $20 for the task into my location. i will need a donkey cart to carry the loaded sacks of manure.
security is very important and thus i will need to ensure that i fence the location. Although its already standing, i might use the remaining amount to renovate it and ensure that its standing properly. I will also need an operating licence and thus i will have to obtain one with this amount too.
