About Me

what mind thinketh so be it. I believe in entrepreneurship. My desire is to help others through my business. I own two matatus plying Thika road. I am an accountant by profession but business man by blood. I live in Nairobi and I like playing and watching soccer. I also like travelling. I find myself reading business articles most of my free time. I have strong leadership and management skills that instills and drives me to take risks in business. With the current unemployment rate in our country and high cost of living I believe self employment and job creation is a role that most of us should play in the modern society.

My Business

I have invested in the matatu industry. I own two Matatus. The industry is very competitive ranging from well maintained vehicles that attract customers easily and make good returns by the end of the day to price fluctuations which has to make the conductors to be aggressive and creative in wooing customers and deciding on the route to cover by the appropriate time. Police harassment is a challenge in the kenyan matatu industry. I intend to save and grow with Zidisha to assist me expand my business in future. I intend to spend about ksh 30,000 to repair one of my matatu that is wanting. I hope this will push my monthy net of ksh 60,000 to around ksh 70,000. I believe the Zidisha family will make me boost my business. I believe in a community of businee and mostly self employment.

Loan Proposal

HI lenders, once again I have come to request for your help. Am planning to repaint one of my matatu which the colour has really faded thus making the daily incomes to go down by 30%. Here in Kenya most of the passagers prefers new matatu or very well maintained matatu, thus my matatu is unable to compete with the new matatus in the market. I have budgeted to use $175 for that and am very sure this will
increase my incomes to 100%.
kindly help me out by lending to me.

Best Regards.
Peter.

Even though Peter Maina has a busy full time job as an accountant for a pharmaceutical company in Nairobi he and his friend, colleague and fellow Zidisha member, John Macharia, were kind enough to take time to meet with me for lunch this week to discuss their businesses and Zidisha loans.
Peter owns two matatus (small buses) that ply the busy 44 route in north eastern Nairobi from the CBD up Thika Road, through Zimmerman (where Peter lives) an on to Kahawa West on the outskirts of the city.
Peter used his recent Zidisha loan to replace the seats and install speakers in one of the matatus meaning he can now charge a higher weekly rate to the driver and conductor who operate the vehicle as it fills with passengers quicker meaning they can make more trips each day. He intends to keep increasing his fleet up towards around ten vehicles as it’s a profitable business or he may even try to save to buy a large bus as these have even higher returns but obviously also cost more to purchase.
Peter says the Zidisha loan has really helped him and he looks forward to applying for bigger loans in the future to help him expand his business.
Peter’s wife, Joyce, works in office administration and their 18 month old son, Frank, is the expected bundle of mischief for his age. Peter confesses to being a big Arsenal football fan saying he watches every game and Frank already has a small Arsenal jersey and other accessories to ensure he grows up supporting the ‘right’ team. Peter would love to travel internationally so a trip to England to watch an Arsenal game live would be a great way to combine two of his passions.
