About Me

My Name is Obed Muchiri Njuki. I am resident of Ongata Rongai county, in the Rift-valley province of Kenya. I started my business after being employed in three different companies where I sharpened the skills necessary for running a graphic design and printing business. I am a skilled graphic designer with enough experience in the Kenyan Printing and Design Industry.
I am a God fearing individual with a religious background.

My Business

My graphic design firm is called Windfalls Designs which deals with the branding and printing of promotional items which include, T-shirts embroidered or printed with companies logos. There is an ever growing demand for promotional material due to the visibility need of every company . This is what my firm provides for. My business policy is to do as much for the customer as necessarily possible so as to ensure that the customer is satisfied and my efforts result in a profit for his or her company. This ensured that the client will ref fer my services to other potential clients or will come back when his or her need arises. My services are fairly charged and to highest degree of professionalism. The Printing and Design industry is an ever expanding industry and due to its technological bias today's machines will be outdated in a very short time. This is a challenge that face it that is trying to keep up with technology and still maintain our profit margin.
Our typical monthly costs range from Ksh.10,000 - Ksh.12, 000 when all the expenses have been deducted.
Our net profit on a good month is Ksh 18,000.
We would like a loan of $5000 to buy a multi- head printing machine which will come in handy due to the approaching Election Year where promotional t-shirts will be in high demand.

Loan Proposal

The loaned amount will be used to purchase a two- head screen printing machine which will enable us to print more t-shirts in time for our customers. This will help due to the on-coming general elections where more campaign t-shirts will be printed and the output time time will have to be reduced due the time limit which is usually small.

Two Head Printer: 12,000 Ksh
Poly-screen Printing Inks: 3,000 Ksh

Dear Mr Njuki, it is a pleasant surprise to hear from you. I am glad to hear about your new job and I hope that it goes well for you. I Iook forward to receiving some repayment in the near future. I regret that I can't answer your technical question, but hopefully someone from Zidisha will be able to do so very shortly. Dear lenders,
Great news! Obed sent us a message yesterday to let us know he found a job. It's just "piece work", as he described it, but he feels better as he is occupied. Obed hopes his current employment helps improve his financial situation, which, as you know, has not been the best in the past couple of months. He asked in his message that we let you know.
We will continue updating you on Obed as he remains in contact with you. We hope he can get back on his feet soon and maybe in the future have a second chance at his printing venture.
    All the best,

    Dear lenders,

My name is Traci Yoshiyama and I am a Client Relationship Manager for Zidisha.

I have spoken with Mr. Njuki and unfortunately he has informed me that his printing and design business did not do well and he was forced to shut it down. He is currently not working, but looking for other work opportunities. He is unsure of when he will be able to resume payments, but we will continue to stay informed on his progress. We will keep you updated on any news. Thank you for your patience.

Obed, we wish you the best of luck with your business ventures!

    Kind regards,
    Traci Yoshiyama

Hi Traci: Many thanks for letting us know the situation with Mr Njuki. The signs weren't good after he had rescheduled his loan for the second time and still didn't make any repayments. It's a real shame that his print & design business failed, but I was also sorry that he didn't feel able to keep us informed about what was going on. Anyway, like you, I wish him the best of luck for the future.
      Best wishes, Hugh

My business can be considered a start-up business according to an entrepreneur training course I attended last two week and since the first capital I got was from the Zidisha Loan, I am making strides and getting clients who have been referred to me by others who Ive done a good job for. This way I'm hopeful that I will get enough for my sustenance, for my business development, and to repay the loan not only in time, but in full. Thank You Zidisha.org for bearing with me during this growth period.

I am having difficulty collecting payment for my services for example some of my clients are asking that I extend their debts t o end of september so that the can pay in full. My area Councillor who I have done a massive campaign t-shirt printing service of about 2,000 t-shirts on L.P.O has asked for me to deffer his payment to late october which is really hurting my cash float making it difficult for me to service other customers who dont pay a deposit first. I am doing my best to recover the said amount but I am afraid that when the time comes for my first payment I might be late so please bear with me. I am also thinking of paying the whole debt in two installments if all goes well. Thank you for being understanding. Obed

Dear Mr Njuki, how is your business going? Have you now been able to recover some or all of the amounts that were owed to to you by some customers? I hope all is well.

    Hello Lenders,

My name is Vivien Barbier and I’m one of the Zidisha current client relationship interns for Kenya. Today, I visited Obed Njuki in Ongata Rongai. We had a long talk about his business and its future development.

After studying graphical design in college, Obed went to work for different printing company to put in practice his theoretical knowledge. He spent two years learning what it takes to become a successful entrepreneur in this industry. He has now quit his former job to open his own printing business and is determined to make it work. This is why he asked Zidisha for a loan to buy the printing machine that you can see on the picture. When I was visiting him, he was about to sent to a senator candidate a brochure about his products. The election that will soon take place in Kenya is a big opportunity for Obed’s business. Candidates will need to print tract, banners and T-shirt. This is why Obed is trying very hard to convince them to do business with him. One of the challenges that Obed is facing here is to make sure that these candidates will remember him when it comes to select who will print all the campaign material.

He also told me that this is Zidisha’s loan that made the brochure for the senator candidate possible. After repaying this loan, he plans to apply for a bigger one that will allow him to buy machine able to print up to 5 colors on the same T-shirt.

We had a very interesting discussion about what he could do to grow his printing business. He was thinking to send samples to potential customers so that they can see the quality of his work. I hope that some of my ideas will help him to launch new products.

To Zidisha Microfinance and all the Lenders.
This is my thank you note to all who responded to my loan request.I will be forever grateful for the trust that you bestowed upon me so that I can better my business and my life in general. The loan was used to have made a two head printing machine and to pay for a products catalog. The latter will be distributed to prospective customers together with an introduction letter according to our business plan. So far I have managed to contact my area Councillor who will be later vying for the Senator seat come the next general election. I am waiting for a positive feedback from his campaign team.

I also had a meeting with Vivien a member of the Zidisha team and he expanded my business model by giving me ideas of how others in the same industry are doing not only here but around the world especially in Europe. I am thankful for his contribution. Thank you all for the support you are providing for us. May God Bless You.
