About Me

I live in a small village called Ogongo which is in Homabay County in the Southern part of Nyanza. Its easy to find your way to my place of residence once you arrive in Homabay town which is our county headquarters. From the main bus station, there are only two buses namely Mbukinya bus or Acacia bus which ply the route to my place. After boarding from the town center, you use the main Homabay Rd as if heading to Kisii Town . The first turning at the junction indicated as Mbita road and it takes another 45 minute drive to a small shopping centre called Ogongo market and that’s where I reside. On alighting you notice a signboard of Waringa Primary School which is where I teach. I stay in the rented semi permanent houses outside the school at the shopping centre, infact they are the most beautifully painted houses at Ogongo market about five minutes walk from the stage. Door number five is precisely where I live.

My Business

My name is Lavender Kikah . I was born 28 years ago in Nyakach kajimbo. I got married three years ago in Homabay district where I am living with my husband who is also a primary school teacher like me. God has blessed us with one loving son who is now two years old. I went to school at Nyabondo Girls before joining Kisumu Girls High School. Later, I got admitted at Shanzu Teachers Training College in Mombasa where I was trained as a PI teacher. Before being selected to work under Teachers Service Commision who is my employer now, I taught in several primary schools in Mombasa and Kisumu. My present work station is Waringa Primary School in Ogongo Mbita-Homabay district. The first time I was posted to come and work here there was a fellow teacher who had a snack shop where children used to buy things like icecream, popcorns , candies etc. Since she was transferred to another school. The premises has been idle and the children are really suffering , waliking long distances to get refreshments. This is what I intend to rebrand and cut that market of the two schools adjacent to our school here. Start the shop and let it run because there are ready clients. My financial breakdown is as follows:
Rent__________USD 60.
Icecream Vending Machine ____USD 125 .
Popcorn Machine___________USD 100.
Shelves /Partitioning_________USD 50.
1 Employee_________USD 45.
Miscellenous ______USD 80.
Total USD 460
With that amount, I prospect to start the business perfectly well.
Personally I love sports so much so that work with the children a lot during the sports season. This term I was selected to be the games mistress in our school. I fancy the opportunity so much, I have a plan to work and let our school be the best in the inter-schools this season.

Loan Proposal

My present work station is Waringa Primary School in Ogongo, Mbita-Homabay district. The area is a densely populated area and has about four schools in an area of about 10km. square. The pupils population is approximately 5000. The first time I was posted to come and work here there was a fellow teacher who had a snack shop where children used to buy things like ice cream, popcorns , candies etc. as their refreshments. Since she was transferred to another school, nobody has ever taken the initiative to pick it up again. The premises had been closed and the children are really suffering , walking long distances to get snacks refreshments during break time. This is what I intend to re-brand and cut that market of the two schools adjacent to our school here. Start the shop and let it run because there are ready clients.

My financial breakdown is as follows:
Rent__________USD 60.
Ice cream Vending Machine ____USD 125 .
Popcorn Machine___________USD 100.
Shelves /Partitioning_________USD 50.
1 Employee_________USD 45.
Miscellaneous ______USD 80.
Total USD 460
With that amount, I prospect to start the business perfectly well.

With the total pupil population of about 4000, I intend to initially serve about 1000 per week. My projection is that suppose each student spends about USD 0.1 per day, it sums up to USD100 per day totaling to USD500 in one week. Thus on monthly basis, I would be looking at a total of USD2000 on the lower side. I project the figure can rise up to even USD4000. That amount together with my monthly salary can sustain the business as well as myself. Also I can be able to repay the loan comfortably if my application to Zidisha would be successful.

The school have just closed for the August holidays so the business is going to be down as the pupils who are my main clients will be away for a whole month so i expect the daily returns to go down thus my reason to adjust the schedule.

I take this opportunity to thank the lenders for sending my loan in a record time. Once i receive the money, i am going to purchase new kitchen accessories and pay for the rent for the new space accquired and then i can engage immediately in doing the work. This will go along way in helping me to sustain my family and repay the loan intime as well. Thankyou very much.

Hi Zidisha Team, I have tried to apply for my second loan after I had received my first and repaid completely. Initially Kshs 1000 was deducted, now again am reading that another Kshs 3000 is going to be deducted and i must pay it back! Does it mean that for every loan that i apply deductins will apply? Kindly clarify please. Thanks.

      Dear Lavender,

I am sorry about the confusion. While the first 1000 KES was a registration fee, Zidisha now also asks every borrower to contribute a small fee of 3000 KES towards the Zidisha Members Loan Fund (only once in a life time). Since Zidisha loans no longer carry interest, contributions to the Zidisha Members Loan Fund are used to help protect the value of lending funds against loan losses. You may read more about why we made this change here:http://forum.zidisha.org/threads/zidisha-members-loan-fund.2258/.
Also, I would just like to say that this discussion boar is primarily aimed for communication with lenders and Zidisha staff can sometimes miss questions by our borrowers here, so I do apologize. Therefore if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us via e-mail on [email protected]. Thank you.

      Best wishes,
