About Me

Thank you lenders for letting me join the group. Am a 28 years old man from a family of seven children. I lost my dad while I was A 2nd year student in Egerton University Kenya, where I was doing a degree in biomedical science and technology. And ever since then life became tough so I had to do some small businesses here and there to cater for my tuition fees. That is why it took me five years to clear my undergraduate. Am God fearing, hardworking and very talented man and I do have various business ideas but lack capital. Am single and currently I live in a single roomed house near our home where my chicken rearing business is and working hard to purchase my own piece of plot and move my business to my own place.

I left campus an year ago and since then i have not landed a permanent job. so ventured into chicken rearing an year ago. I started rearing layers and broilers.after realizing there is a demand for eggs and white meat in Nakuru town. I have over 10 clients who run some small food kiosks n the neighborhood. Right now I have 200 layers, 200 roosters and 150 broilers. I normally sell the broilers after three months and currently am handling my 5th batch and two pigs which I bought with the earnings I got after investing my 1st loan.

My first loan helped me expand my business and in the process bought two pigs which I plan to rear in the hope of bettering my life and starting a big piggery farm. As per now I have managed to purchase a laptop which I use to do some online jobs, including article writing which has helped me increase my monthly income by up to $200. plus currently am learning how to trade forex online.

My Business

My source of income is selling roosters and the broilers once they attain the required weight and eggs. The demand for both the meat and eggs is quite high in town and the more I produce the more I get.

The business risks I deal with daily include normal diseases, pecking, cats which love eating the chicks. To handle the risk I make sure I vaccinate all the chickens in the poultry house and make sure that they are feed a balanced diet. The earning from the first loan helped me purchase two pigs which am currently rearing and hoping to purchase some more.

Currently I need a loan to purchase increase my roosters which I will sell during the christmas holiday and broilers and from this project I can finally set up a hydrophonic system which will help me produce more fodder for my pigs and roosters at a lower rate. I will also use part of the loan to purchase more broilers and cockerels to help me stabilize the business. I earn a gross monthly income of $300 from the business and spend $120 on their feeds, $10 on vaccine, $15 on electricity and water, $25 on transportation. I earn a net income of $130.

Loan Proposal

With the rainy season in Kenya I have lost 20 birds to the cold season and the cats in the neighborhood, so half of the loan will be used to repair and expand the poultry house, this way the chickens will be protected from the cold. I plan to insulate the house more and increase the size of the house so as to make the birds more comfortable and relaxed. And expanding the house will create more room for the number of birds I plan to have by the beginning of next year.

The remainder will be used to purchase better laying boxes to help me curb the egg eating problem and improve the lighting in the poultry house. The dimmer the lighting in the laying area, the lower the number of eggs lost. And this will help me stop the egg eating habit which the birds have developed.

The layers business helped fund my education in campus after my dad passed away. I had expanded the business but everything went wrong during the Covid-19 period. I had to close the business since I couldn't support it from my earnings.

But I want to restart the project and extend expand it from my backyard...

the government introduced a new VAT bill which increases the price of various items by 16% including the broilers feeds and this has affected my budget. so I would like to repay my loan starting next month after I have sold the current batch of broilers I have and redo my working capital. thank you for the loan again I will be selling them in less than three weeks time. and then make my 1st repayment installment.
    regards

Hi Marvin, I have insulated my poultry house and always keep it warm. I got the laying boxes, but getting rid of the egg eating habit had already spun out of control. So currently am working out a deal with a client to sell this batch off as broilers and get a new batch of layers by November. And this time round I plan to do it right and rear them in a bigger and better equipped poultry house. The business is quite challenging especially with less working capital, but am coping quite well. Thank you for the support Marvin and am hopeful that one day the business will grow and allow me to venture into other businesses.
    Regards
    geoffrey

      HI Geoffrey,
Glad to hear that you made progress on the shelter, but the other problem is a big one. Glad you are taking steps to recover from it.
I saw some internet web sites about the problem.
Here are some web URLs, but there are many more. All discuss similar causes and prevention. They discuss space, egg breakage, nutrition, things like that.

I believe you have much insight into raising your animals, certainly much more than I have!

Best of luck facing your challenges head-on.

Hi lenders, hope you guys have been good well I gave the broilers their first vaccine for new castle ten days ago and so far they are growing at a very fast rate which is definitely good. The business has been very challenging especially with the cold season in Kenya and am happy to say that of the 100 birds I purchased only one died because of cold. I introduced them to finisher yesterday and they are doing fine. I gave them the second vaccine for Gumboro last Friday and am waiting for Friday to give them the third one. Thank you guys for the support. And as promised mewesten here are some of the photos, this one was when they were a week old. I will upload more soon.
Thank you lender and I will always keep you updated

      Hi Geoffrey,
That's excellent news about the new chicks. Thanks also for the photo!
Poultry can be profitable, but I understand there are so many potential problems to prevent.
Have you been able to insulate your building?
Have you been able to get boxes for the layers? That seems to be very important to prevent egg eating. I have heard that once they start doing that it's very difficult to control.

I am looking forward to hearing from you again when time allows.
      Sincerely,
      Marvin

Thank you so much Marvin, I have just gone through them and they are quite helpful. Let me follow some of their advice and hopefully it works out. If it doesn’t work out then I will implement my other plan and make sure I use their instructions with my next layers batch, this way I will avoid this habit, because controlling it is almost impossible. Thank you again Marvin and may you be blessed even more. I will make sure I keep you updated on my decision and how the broilers will be doing, right now they weigh about 500g each.
      Regards

Hi lenders, thank you for the loan, I have already received the loan and I have already bought a bag of cement to repair my chicken house. The egg eating problem is still an issue, but my mentor insisted that if the habit persists I should sell the layers and get more broilers which am more familiar with for now until I save more cash to make a better poultry house for the layers. I have already used half of the money as down payment for my next batch of broilers which will be ready by the end of the month and by then I would have sold my current batch of broilers which have already matured. Thank you lenders and I will tell you more about my business soon
