Hello All, I am a Zidisha volunteer and I wanted to share some information that Lear wanted to be relayed to her lenders:

She was sick and her husband was supposed to be managing the chicks. He then had a kidney transplant and as a result almost half of her chicks died. She is going through a lot financially, including having to come up with the money for school fees so she will start paying as soon as she can.

I hope this explains why she has fallen behind on her repayments,
    Victoria (Zidisha Volunteer)

    Hello Lenders,
My name is Andrew Weber and I recently served as a Zidisha Client Relationship Manger in Kenya. There I paid a visit to Lear at her business in a town on the outskirts of Nairobi. Lear raises chickens on her shamba in two large coups. Walking into the coups was quite a sight to behold. The coups contain hundreds of chickens squawking away and nibbling at their food. They are all maintained by their vigilent caretaker Lear.

Lear’s business received a major boost from her Zidisha loan. Before she used to keep an inventory of about 500 chickens, but with her loan she has boosted her stock to 700 chickens, a 40% increase. Lear’s business was already doing well before the boost. She typically keeps a chicken for about 6 weeks before she sells it in a market. She usually buys a chicken for about $.87 and sells for about $4.12, though there are costs involved in caring for the chickens and keeping them healthy. She says despite the strong profits on the sale of a healthy chicken, there are still risks in the business as chickens can become sick rendering the investment obsolete. To offset the risks Lear wants to buy more quality chickens from trusted sellers and continue to invest in care of the chickens. Her Zidisha loan has helped her in both of these areas in addition to increasing the total supply.

Lear went to a larger market recently and found it difficult to compete with rich seller who had a stock of thousands of chickens. She dreams that will be her one day. She says raising chickens is her hobby and she simply loves the business. With her passion for the business, her educational background in agricultural studies, and continued access to capital Lear may one day achieve that dream.

Dear lenders hope you are all okay and pushing on with you day to day activity. On my side we are okay with my family and my business is doing well and I have sold the second lot of the chicken and I will be bring another lot soon, The selling price was fair dispute the high supply for the product in the market but I manage to break even and made a good profit. Thanks all lenders and I hope all my loan repayments are current.
