About Me

My name is Agnes Nthenya. I was born and brought up in a family of six and I am the first born. I live in a deep rural area where I do farming for a living. The area depends on rain-fed agriculture, but it has a semi-arid climate so the produce is normally very poor.

I am married with three children and my husband works in a faraway city - Mombasa - where he went six years ago to look for a job. He is the one who introduced me to Zidisha. After my secondary school, I went into farming and that is what I am still doing on my small piece of land. I produce maize and beans for feeding the family, and when the produce is good I sell the surplus to the market.

My Business

I am a small-scale farmer and my farming is mostly for feeding my family. As I mentioned above, I live in a semi-arid area and we experience a lot of crop failure due to inadequate rainfall. I normally plant fast-maturing crop varieties to cope with this challenge, but sometimes the plants don't mature fast enough before the dry spell destroys them. It is a tough life and, when this happens, I have to depend on my husband, who runs a small business in Mombasa city.

I also own four goats and a cow and they produce milk, again for the family. The greatest challenge I face is water, because I normally get it from a borehole, which is about three kilometers away. I carry the water in 20-liter containers and I use my bare back to carry the water home. This is tedious and I make several trips to fetch enough water for the family consumption and also for the animals.

Loan Proposal

If I get this loan, I will use it to buy a donkey for transporting water from the borehole to my house. This will save me a lot of time that I spend when going to and from the water point which normally consumes half of my all day time. This is the most common way of transport in the area.

A donkey will cost me around $100 and I my husband has promised to give me the extra money in case this loan money will not be enough to buy the animal.

Thank you and I hope you will consider my loan application.

Dear lenders, quite a lot has changed since I took the last loan. I moved from my rural area to join my husband in Mombasa and I am now running a grocery store. It is a whole new world for me in the city and I like every bit of it. Thank you for making my transition very smooth.

Thank you all who made this possible. I am now a proud owner of a healthy donkey that helps me in all manner of jobs. This has really relieved most of the burden I used to carry on my back.

I'm glad that you were able to get the funding, and then buy the donkey. I'm very happy that you won't have to walk so much to get water now.
Please let us know if you are able to buy some cattle.
    Thank-you for your repayments.

I received KES 9100 ($100). Thank you lenders, I got the money and I managed to buy the donkey yesterday. This means a lot to me because it will save me from trekking for long distances in search of water. I will also increase the number cows because I will be able to feed them well due to ease of transport means.

I made my first payment last week, and I want to keep my repayment record clean as an appreciation of what you did to me.
