About Me

My Name is veronica Wanjiku, I am a Kenyan citizen born in Kericho. I am a single mother of three children. I am staying in Nakuru County at a place called Kabazi. I am a trained kindergarten teacher. I had worked for six years as a kindergarten teacher before resigning and deciding to start a day care business. I decide to open this business after seeing the suffering of poor parents who could not afford to hire domestic workers. Today in Kenya, domestic workers have become savvy about employment laws such as minimum wage, health care cover, and other allowances — leading high cost of maintaining them which many poor parents cannot afford to pay. Most parents in my area are casual labourers, they are poor and cannot afford to hire house help to look after their children. Before starting this day care centre, some mothers in my area were forced to resign from their jobs in order to stay back at home and take care of their children. This became a big concern for me because these mothers could not go to work in order to get money to buy food for their children. I then decided to start this business with my small savings and with a loan that I had borrowed from microfinance. With this money I paid for the business license, rented a house, hired two staffs bought furniture such as cats, cribs, crib mattresses, playpen, changing tables and high chairs. For safety equipments, I bought smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, outlet cover, playground fencing, a first aid Kit, fire extinguishers and a lock box for medicine. For play equipment, I bought riding toys, slides, balance beams, balls, puzzle and books.

My Business

My day care centre is called Nyoto Day care centre .The demand for my day care business has increased in my area because of the rising number of poor and single parents who cannot afford to hire domestic workers. The business is also growing on a daily basis because of the rising insecurity in light of a surge in kidnappings and child theft. Today many parents in my area prefer to bring their children in the day care centre to prevent child theft and kidnapping which has become rampant in Kabazi Estate. Currently I have a population of 40 children. The day care centre is open Monday to Saturday. I charge a fee of Ksh 100 per child on a daily basis. The children are taken in from 7.30am to 5.30 pm in the evening. I spend Ksh 15,000 monthly on children’s food. I have two staffs that I pay Ksh20, 000 as salaries. Today the demand for my services is overwhelming because my day care centre is very affordable to many parents. The demand is so high that I would like to acquire a bigger house so that I can accommodate more children. I therefore request Zidisha to help me get funds that will enable me to help many poor parents who require the services of a day care center

Loan Proposal

I would like to improve the condition of the day care centre. I will buy fun that will bring fresh air during hot seasons. I will buy a much bigger gas cylinder that will help with the cooking of children's food. At the moment I have a smaller gas cylinder.I am also planning to improve the children's sleeping materials. I would like to buy new bedding for the children.I will also paint the children's room and buy more toys.concerning security, I will install an alarm system for security purposes.
