About Me

My Name is veronica Wanjiku, I am a Kenyan citizen born in Kericho. I am a single mother of three children. I am staying in Nakuru County at a place called Kabazi. I am a trained kindergarten teacher. I had worked for six years as a kindergarten teacher before resigning and deciding to start a day care business. I decide to open this business after seeing the suffering of poor parents who could not afford to hire domestic workers. Today in Kenya, domestic workers have become savvy about employment laws such as minimum wage, health care cover, and other allowances — leading high cost of maintaining them which many poor parents cannot afford to pay. Most parents in my area are casual labourers, they are poor and cannot afford to hire house help to look after their children. Before starting this day care centre, some mothers in my area were forced to resign from their jobs in order to stay back at home and take care of their children. This became a big concern for me because these mothers could not go to work in order to get money to buy food for their children. I then decided to start this business with my small savings and with a loan that I had borrowed from microfinance. With this money I paid for the business license, rented a house, hired two staffs bought furniture such as cats, cribs, crib mattresses, playpen, changing tables and high chairs. For safety equipments, I bought smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, outlet cover, playground fencing, a first aid Kit, fire extinguishers and a lock box for medicine. For play equipment, I bought riding toys, slides, balance beams, balls, puzzle and books.

My Business

My day care centre is called Nyoto Day care centre .The demand for my day care business has increased in my area because of the rising number of poor and single parents who cannot afford to hire domestic workers. The business is also growing on a daily basis because of the rising insecurity in light of a surge in kidnappings and child theft. Today many parents in my area prefer to bring their children in the day care centre to prevent child theft and kidnapping which has become rampant in Kabazi Estate. Currently I have a population of 40 children. The day care centre is open Monday to Saturday. I charge a fee of Ksh 100 per child on a daily basis. The children are taken in from 7.30am to 5.30 pm in the evening. I spend Ksh 15,000 monthly on children’s food. I have two staffs that I pay Ksh20, 000 as salaries. Today the demand for my services is overwhelming because my day care centre is very affordable to many parents. The demand is so high that I would like to acquire a bigger house so that I can accommodate more children. I therefore request Zidisha to help me get funds that will enable me to help many poor parents who require the services of a day care center

Loan Proposal

I would like to improve the condition of the day care centre. I will buy fun that will bring fresh air during hot seasons. I will buy a much bigger gas cylinder that will help with the cooking of children's food. At the moment I have a smaller gas cylinder.I am also planning to improve the children's sleeping materials. I would like to buy new bedding for the children.I will also paint the children's room and buy more toys.concerning security, I will install an alarm system for security purposes.

I am requesting to be allowed to pay my installments into smaller amounts. My day care center business is not doing well. Many parents has withdrawn their children from the center as we approach the end of the year. Many of whom I have talked too have explained to me that they can no longer afford to pay for the daycare centers services. I am left with very children and the number is reducing each and every day. Zidisha has been very helpful to me and I don't want to disappoint my lenders. I wish to pay the little amount that I can afford at the moment

I am so thankful to all my lenders for their support. My day care center has improved a lot. I was able to buy a fun that will bring cool air during hot seasons. I also bought a bigger gas cylinder, I am now able to prepare child's food much faster than before.lastly, I painted the children's room and bought more toys. There is a lot of improved but I still have a long way to go because I was not able to do everything as I had planned in my budget. I still need to work hard to get more money in order to continue improving the daycare center. Thank you so much for your support

I wish to paint and also carpet the whole floor of the day care centre. I am also planing to put up a small play ground outside the house where the children can play. I will be spending some good amount of money in doing all these. This is why, I would like to reduce my weekly repayment to Ksh 300.

I managed to admit 15 more children who wanted to be admitted in my day care centre. I was also able to buy other material that I need in my day care centre in order to cater for the new children.I am now able to pay my loan more comfortably. This is because my daily income has now increased and now I am going to increase my profits.

At the moment I have received 15 more children who want to be admitted in my day care centre. This has forced me to pay my loan in small instalments. I would like to use the rest of my money in buying other material that I need in my day care centre in order to cater for these new children who would like to be taken.

I was able to acquire a bigger house that can now accommodate more children. I bought more furniture such as cats, cribs, crib mattresses, playpen, changing tables and high chairs, I also bought more playing equipment, utensils and hired two more staffs. I now have a population of 55 children. The number is growing each and everyday. My daily income has also increased as well as my profit. I would therefore wish to repay more money to Zidisha in order to clear my loan.
