About Me

My name is James Wainaina, ID № 10744177, a Kenyan citizen. I live and work in Rongai District, Visoi sub-location, Rongai Division of Nakuru County. My home is near Kandutura police post and Kandutura Dispensary. Born in 1968, I am the fourth born in a family of nine; three boys and six girls. I went to Mogotio primary school for my primary education. Later on I joined Sacho high school for my Ordinary (Certificate of secondary examinations) and advanced level education (Certificate of advanced secondary education).
I am legally married to one wife, with six children; three boys and three girls. The first born in the family is a boy who is pursuing a diploma in pharmaceutical technology at Eldoret polytechnic; a local national polytechnic. The second born is currently waiting to sit for her Kenya Certificate of secondary Examinations, which is a prerequisite to university admission in our country. The third, a girl is in form one. The rest, two boys and a girl, are in primary school.

My Business

I am currently living in a six acre piece of land; three of which I keep 3 cows, 3 goats and 7 sheep. The remaining 3 acres are used to grow maize, beans, tomatoes and kales. The cow produces about 4 litres of milk in the morning and about 3 litres in the afternoon; total 7 litres daily. One litre is consumed at home and the rest sold locally for Ksh 30 per litre; total 30x6= ksh 180 daily. The monthly gross income from the milk is Ksh 180x30=Ksh 5400. Its expenses are weekly dousing of insecticide costing Ksh 400 (4x100=Ksh 400) monthly and de-worming after three months; which on average costs Ksh 300 monthly. They graze in the open field. Therefore, the cows give me an approximate income of Ksh 4700.
This season I have harvested 20 bags of maize (current price of Ksh 2000 per 90 kg; translating to a total of Ksh 40,000) and 5 bags of beans (current price of Ksh 5,000 per 90 kg bag; translating to a total of Ksh 25,000): total gross income Ksh 65,000. The cost of inputs and labour was Ksh 10,000. Therefore, net income from maize and beans section was Ksh 55,000. This is a monthly income of approximately Ksh 4,500.
The tomatoes and kales have given me this year a gross income of Ksh 90,000 against a total expense of Ksh 25,000, leaving a net profit of Ksh 65.000; translating to a net monthly income of approximately Ksh 5,400.
My wife, who works as a teacher, earns a net salary of Ksh 15,000. This, together with my income from the piece of land totaling Ksh 14,600, is used to pay for the children’s school fees and upkeep; leaving us with roughly Ksh 5,000 for savings and any investments.
I intend to improve the quality and the quantity of my cows. This I intend to do by buying one high grade cow, preferably a Friesian, which produces more milk than my current breed. A Friesian cow produces about 20 litres a day, ten litres in the morning and ten in the afternoon; which would fetch at the current rate of Ksh 30 per litre, Ksh 30x 20 =Ksh 600 per day. This would translate to a monthly gross income of Ksh 18,000. The cost of managing this cow would approximate Ksh 5,000 per month, giving me a monthly net income of Ksh 13,000. A fully grown Friesian cow costs between Ksh 50,000 and Ksh 55,000 locally.

Loan Proposal

I want to revert to irrigation fed agriculture as opposed to rain fed agriculture. I want to dig a well at an estimated cost of Ksh 40,000 and use the rest of the money to buy a petrol pump at a cost of Ksh 15,000 which will be used to irrigate 4 acres during the coming dry season. The balance will buy farm inputs like fertilizers and any chemicals required. Of the four acres, two will be under tomatoes, one under kales and the remaining one under cabbages.

    Dear Mr. Wainaina,
I just received a "Writeoff notification" for this loan, and seeing that it isn't reflected on this page, I'm thinking it's a mistake, especially since there was mentioned the possibility of (a) smaller repayment(s) on the Mar 04, 2014 (Samuel Shehi, below). I think a write-off is a terribly drastic way of settling your temporary difficulties, one that will not benefit anyone involved.

    All the best,
    Mårten

    Dear Evelyn,
I am VM. I have phoned James today 11:35am and inquired about repayments. He explained that he has been facing difficulties and was worried that rescheduling would make his loan way too expensive for him. So he was awaiting when finances improve and he makes a repayment. I explained to him that a today's reschedule can be reversed( rescheduled backwards) in future to lower interest amount. He has now agreed to make a repayment today. Thank you.

      Hello Mr. Wainaina,
Unfortunately it seems that you did not make a repayment in March - we are still wondering if everything is all right with you. Please do reschedule your loan as needed - if you do not, it will hurt your record for future loans! I do hope that you are well and that your business troubles are only temporary.
Mr. Shehi - Thank-you for your efforts to communicate with Mr. Wainaina for us lenders.

    Mr. Wainaina,

I hope you and your business are doing well. I see that you are Jared Opiyo's VM. Mr. Opiyo has not made a single repayment on his loan - he is now $305 in arrears.

I left him a message on Jan. 30, but has not responded to it. Could you please check up on him and see what's going on? We would like to know if his business is facing any problems and when we might be receiving some repayments.

    Thank you,
    Cris

    Hello James Wainaina,

I have enjoyed reading your comments and hearing about your progress. You've been silent the last few months. This seems to me to be out of character and causes me concern. I hope everything is OK with you, but I fear that it is not.

I hope you'll be able to post an update and let everyone know what is happening with you and how you are doing.

I'm sincerely concerned about your well being,
    Evinpa

Dear James: I helped to fund a loan for Patrick Mumo, and I see that you are his Volunteer Mentor. I was very eager to see his work succeed and now am told that the entire loan was written off, with no repayments made. Maybe I missed some earlier explanation, but if it is not too much trouble I would be grateful to know if there has been any news of his situation. Thank you and God bless!

Dear James: I am one of the lenders who helped to fund a loan for Joyce Mwangi of Kimangu Village, and I notice that you are her Volunteer Mentor. I am sorry to trouble you, but I wondered if you had any news for us about Ms Mwangi? She is now well behind with her loan repayments, and any news of her would be most welcome. We very much appreciate the work that you do as a Volunteer Mentor and it is good to read your posts on the Member Forum. Best wishes, Hugh

      Hallo hugh 1,
It is true that I am a mentor to Joyce Mwangi. I have tried to contact her in person but failed. Fortunately I have been able to contact her Pastor who contacted her. The pastor told me that Joyce has been sick for some time now and that she will resume payment once she gets better. I have posted this in the VM report page. Thank you.

        Dear James
That's extremely useful information. Thank you so much. Obviously I'm very sorry to hear that Joyce has been sick, and I hope that she will soon be fully recovered. This explains the break in her payments and as you suggest, let's hope that she will be able to resume them when she is better. Thank you again for your help - it is greatly appreciated. Best wishes, Hugh

Hello Mr. Wainaina - Thank-you for introducing me to this poet Mr. Lousignont. The message is also quite powerful and so well expressed here.

I hope you had a very nice weekend with your family.

I am very excited to learn of your progress with improving irrigation on your land - as well as learning more in general about how your farm is developing.

Wishing you all the best in the comming week.

    Dear Everyone,
I have decided to post a message by Gregory M Lousignont
Today, when I awoke, I suddenly realized that this is the best day of my life, ever! There were times when I wondered if I would make it to today; but I did! And because I did I'm going to celebrate!

Today, I'm going to celebrate what an unbelievable life I have had so far: the accomplishments, the many blessings, and, yes, even the hardships because they have served to make me stronger.

I will go through this day with my head held high, and a happy heart. I will marvel at God's seemingly simple gifts: the morning dew, the sun, the clouds, the trees, the flowers, the birds. Today, none of these miraculous creations will escape my notice.

Today, I will share my excitement for life with other people. I'll make someone smile. I'll go out of my way to perform an unexpected act of kindness for someone I don't even know.

Today, I'll give a sincere compliment to someone who seems down. I'll tell a child how special he is, and I'll tell someone I love just how deeply I care for her and how much she means to me.

Today is the day I quit worrying about what I don't have and start being grateful for all the wonderful things God has already given me.

I'll remember that to worry is just a waste of time because my faith in God and his Divine Plan ensures everything will be just fine.

And tonight, before I go to bed, I'll go outside and raise my eyes to the heavens. I will stand in awe at the beauty of the stars and the moon, and I will praise God for these magnificent treasures.

As the day ends and I lay my head down on my pillow, I will thank the Almighty for the best day of my life. And I will sleep the sleep of a contented child, excited with expectation because I know tomorrow is going to be the best day of my life, ever!
    Have a wonderful weekend,
    James Wainaina

      Hi henderson,
It is also a good feeling to feel appreciated, thank you so much. I try to give as much information as is possible under the circumstances and also try to be a good farmer who gets the best out of land.

    Hi James,

It's great to see a fellow Zidisha member making such good use of their loan and I am especially interested in the water tank contruction as it is quite rare to see such loans on Zidisha. If you are able to post any photos of this (and the new cow) during construction I'm sure everyone would love to see.

You are a fantastic example of how Zidisha brings people together for development and I hope that once your project is finished Zidisha can continue to help your business expand.

God Bless you and your family,
    Greg

    Hello James Wainaina,

First, congratulations for raising your loan so quickly on your first attempt. I am happy for your success and look forward to hearing more about your latest farming project.

Thank you also for sharing the photo of your wife and 3-year-old daughter. Please tell your wife that I am also pleased to meet her “in picture.”

Like Hugh, I also was very happy to see your post on the Zidisha forum. I would encourage you to participate more often. Julia embraces other people’s ideas and uses them to try to strengthen Zidisha. It would be nice to see more borrowers contribute their ideas to the forum and I am sure from reading your posts on your borrower profile page that your participation in the forum would benefit the greater good of Zidisha.

I would point out that we are only categorized by Zidisha as “borrowers” and “lenders,” but we are all the same – human beings. A Zidisha “lender” in many cases might be a borrower in their own country, for example borrowing from a bank to buy a home or pay for other expenses.

I hope you have a nice day,
    Evinpa

Hi James: I was delighted to read the message that you have posted on the Members Forum. What you have said, needed to be said. But Zidisha has almost 3600 registered lenders and it would be wrong to imagine that the sort of views expressed in an objectionable post over the weekend are in any way shared by most Zidisha lenders. Please keep sending us your news, and thank you very much for your work as a VM. Best wishes, Hugh

    Hi Lenders,
It is a clear Monday morning, full of sunshine and hope. I woke up early to send my children to school and attend to my livestock. I have milked the cows and I am now preparing to deliver it to the delivery centre for onward delivery to the processing plants in Nakuru; the nearest City. We don't have a local processing plant.
I have also started to prepare the foundation on the place where the tank is to be hoisted. The metal pipes were bought last week. And this is the reason why I have increased the interest on my loan to 11%; to hasten the bids by attracting more lenders.
    Thank you
    James

    Hello James Wainaina,

Thank you for all your updates. I enjoyed reading your comments and seeing new photos of your animals, especially your cow Zidisha.

Please do not be discouraged about the speed of the bidding process. Your loan is getting a lot more bids in a shorter amount of time than many of the other borrowers who have been seeking a large amount recently.

I am happy to help again with your latest loan because you honor your commitment with repaying your loans and through your comments I’ve learned how appreciative you have been in being able to buy the cow of your dreams and to make improvements to your farm, which help your family.

Please tell you wife thank you for her greeting. I also say hello to her and send my warm regards from the U.S. If someone had told me 10 years ago that I would have been lending money to someone in Kenya, I would not have believed it either. It does feel miraculous that technology has evolved in such a way that now we can communicate with each other and send money half way around the world through a computer and cell phones.

I hope that you and your wife have a very nice weekend.

Wishing you all the best that life has to offer,
    Evinpa

    Have a prayerful weekend.
