My Business

my business is generally based on selling shoes there is high demand of these products/goods due to increasing number of tertiary institutions in kisii town and its environs. and further more the economic growth of the town. My customers prefer my business to serve them because i sell modern and newest shoes at an a fordable price. I serve all sexes. At the moment my business stands at a a chance of growing to another level and looking forward to increasing and expand it to cover large number of population in kisii region. an intending to use the loan to introduce other products that are being used by the ladies and gents.i.e clothes and jewellery

Loan Proposal

I will use the loan to add more shoes and some clothes for my customers. Once again thank you zidisha to have given me this chance to expand my business. i would have loved to add some cosmetics as the demand is high and i wanted to enter into that business too, but the loan size cant allow me to do so.

    Dear all,

I had the pleasure of meeting Ruth Omwenga this Wednesday. We met in Kisii town and went to a café that was overlooking one of the main roundabouts in Kisii. I started asking her how she was doing and how the business was doing. She replied “I’m fine, but the business does not exist right now.” You must be as surprised as I was at the moment.

With her first Zidisha loan Ruth managed to acquire a small stall in Kisii, which she used to open her cloth-selling business. Business was not great in the beginning, but slowly it was picking up and going better and better. With each of her consecutive loans she stocked up her supply of cloth to ensure that the business was running smoothly and she also increased the diversity of her inventory. In addition, with her last loan she moved to a bigger room, which attracted more costumers. The business was going so well that she was even able to hire an employee, leaving her space to concentrate on her studies. With her business she managed to both support her family and fulfill her dream of studying nursing. Her parents are unemployed, they have a small farm, from which they get food and a little bit of money, but that is by far not enough to pay the exorbitant school and university fees for their children. Therefore Ruth is now, in addition to her own fees, paying the school fees for 3 of her younger siblings.

The situation was not always so positive, before she opened her business Ruth was walking around from student hostel to student hostel selling clothes wherever possible. The money however, was poor. It barely got her through the day, definitely not being enough to pay the university fees and also not leaving anything to support her younger siblings. The situation was difficult. When hearing of Zidisha through a friend, Ruth saw a chance to change her life and, being the entrepreneurial and hard-working young woman she is, she grabbed it. Looking back, she says: “Zidisha really helped me, it changed everything.”

At the moment, however, the business does no longer exist. Facing her final exams Ruth simply did not have the time to deal with her business. In addition, and more importantly, she needed the money she usually uses to purchase her stock to pay the fees for her younger brothers. Therefore, there is just no stock to sell right now. “How do you want to pay back your loan then?!” I ask her anxiously. “Oh, that will be fine. There are few small jobs I can take up here and there, which will give me enough money to pay it back. I needed to reschedule though, to make the amount manageable.” She replies. I nod to show my understanding. “However, what will happen after you finish your exams?” She replies that she will go back to her business, and ensures me that it will be even better after the exams than it has been before. She would then have both the time and energy to fully commit herself to the business. “But don’t you want to work as a nurse?” I interrupt. “Of course I want to work as a nurse, but nurses don’t get paid very well here, so a small business on the side would be helpful. Also, I probably will not get a position immediately, it will take some time, and therefore it will be good to have something that can keep me going.” She replies.

For some people microcredit loans merely help them do things faster. For others, it does not really improve their situation. But for many, it can be the step from one dire to situation to new, much brighter, circumstances. It is always a pleasure to encounter the last group.
