About Me

I am a business man living in Nairobi City, at satellite; an estate which is about 40 KM from the Nairobi, the city. I have been a business for about 5 years; doing different kinds of businesses. Thank you Zidisha for giving me a chance to get funding. Since I moved to Satellite, I realized that water is a major challenge around the area. There is no water in most residential plots in the area. People in the area depend on water sold by vendors who use carts known as “mikokoteni” to sell water to them. The demand is so high that the water vendors exploit the residents by selling the water at a very high cost, ranging from 20 to sometimes 50 shillings per 20 litre jelican of water. This had happened to me very many times and I always wished there was something I could do about it. As one day I was having a conversation with my landlord requesting him to provide water for the tenants, he said that he would have a problem controlling the project. I requested if he could allow me to run the project as my own and he agreed. I thought that was a good business idea and I implemented it. Using some savings worth 400 US I bought a 4000literes tank, and registered the business with 28USD. I built a wooden stand for the tank and the business started. A friend who was had just finished high school is currently running the business. The business gets customers by mainly word of mouth, customers mainly being residents of plots around

My Business

The business name is ‘mwaz water suppliers’ and our motto is ‘Maji ni uhai.’ We plan to expand our business through buying more water tanks which will bebigger in size to enable consistent supply of water. The monthly net profit of the business has increased from 105 US to 125 USD after paying 7USD electricity bill of the electricity consumed since we sell water till late in the night. With part of the net profit the business is able to pay the loan and use the rest of the money to expand the business. The business has been in operation since December 2012 and the business is doing well making good progress in terms of profits especially after getting theprevious loan that increased thewater capacity. Zidisha loans will help in facilitating the achievement of our goals. My plan is to have more tanks, thistime larger ones and open more selling points in other parts of Satellite area
‘Mwaz water suppliers’ hopes to provide water to every residential area in Satellite to alleviate water shortage.

The continuing long rains and the introduction of piped water in the area by the government has affected the sales greatly

    Hi Lenders,

I wish to thank you for funding the previous loans which have been of great help to the business. I would like to apply for a new loan but the loan fund being deducted is too high. I am requesting if the loan fund would be distributed so as to enable the loan to help the business more effectively.

    Regards,
    David

      Hi David,
I understand that in order to keep money available at zero percent interest, a contribution was being asked of borrowers to help offset against unpaid loans.
I am not sure how much of a contribution is being sought or how it is calculated.
You mention that the amount requested is "high", I am not sure if anything can be done, but let me email Zidisha on your behalf to make sure that the amount being requested is being calculated correctly.
      Regards
      Michael

          Hi David,
I have read the link above and a couple of other pages on the Zidisha website, and have found out that a few things have changed in the last few months.
I assume that the changes have been clearly explained in your correspondence with Zidisha.
I know now that the Loan fund deposit is higher than it used to be to ensure that there are still lenders in order to fund the loans.
The other change to the loan fund contribution is that it is no longer a fee but a deposit, which means that it is refundable if your loan has been fully repaid.
I know that this does not help in the short term.
Perhaps you could consider borrowing the deposit as well as any new funds required, pay the loan over a longer time frame so as to not cause undue hardship.
The Deposit would be a bit like a savings account.
I hope that you are able to continue using Zidisha.
Perhaps having a Deposit, that is refundable at a time in the future when you no longer wish to use Zidisha, may be a reasonable "cost" for having access to interest free loans for as long as you want them.
A lot to consider, I know. I hope to see you back using Zidisha.
          All the best
          Michael

The rainy season has caused great reduction in the water sales. This is because most clients are getting water from the water harvested from the rains

    Hi Michael,

I take this opportunity to thank you once again for funding my previous loan. The funds boosted my business by increasing the storage capacity of the water tanks. This has been of help since the business was able to have constant supply of water especially during the long dry season.

    Regards,
    David

Due to the prolonged dry season, there is water shortage in many residential places and this has led to the increase in the water sales. The loanhelped in increase of the storage capacity and therefore I am able to buy water in larger quantities

    Hi David,
Great to see that you are doing well and always repaying on time.
    Thanks for that.
If I could make a recommendation...
If you are finding it easy to make the current repayments, you might want to consider rescheduling to pay the loan off early.
That way you could save interest!!!
As I am sure you know, that is always a good business outcome.
    All the best
    Michael.
