My names are Partson Mudenda and I'm 49 years old
I grew up in a village in Choma district Southern province, in Zambia
I have been brought up with a farming background, and we treasured livestock much than crop production in my village.
Among prominent animals we keep goats have proved to a very good income earner and a source of proteins in our rural setup.
I have inspired to put up a sustainable goat farming practices as it is already evident from the small numbers we are keeping.
Currently am involved in gardening as vegetable production is so profitable due to the drought which has hit the southern part of Zambia in the previous rain season.
From the vegetable production am are able to feed my family and the surplus its taken to the market for some income.
I have 42 goats currently 2 males (crosses) and 42 females (local breed). Im planning to introduce 3 male pure Boer goats and to buy 30 more females which will help in in improving goat breeding project. One local breed female is going at K250 giving as total of K7500 and the pure Boer goats are going at K5000 giving us a total K15000. Bringing the grand total K22500.
That's my target of having not less than 150 kids per year.
But to reach to these numbers I have to be buying goats one by one since I don't have enough resources, to realise some income currently I'm doing some baking business which brings some income on daily basis and I have a vehicle which people hire sometimes to take their products into town and I give lifts to people to and fro town which also gives us some income at the end of the day.
If i can continue buying goats in small numbers soon the numbers of improved breed will reach 100 + and we have a good market in Southern African region for goat meat so market is not a problem.
This will improve the goats in my community this will lead to household food security and improved income at household level, which see our children have access to education and better medical services.
