My name is Benjamin Watako Opara,I was born in Busia County in a Family of 9,and I am the first born.I went to Nambale primary School and later joined Musingu High School for post primary Education.I later joined kenyatta University for a degree in BCOM ,accounting option.
After graduating getting a job become a nightmare.I have been searching for actively but with no success.I decided to venture into farming as it was the only available option at ,I have done it with passion and its paying off.Though I have no background in agriculture.I have attended short causes on AI and green house maintenance to keep me posted about latest techniques.
I come from land where most people are farmers,we general do subsistence farming for daily food consumption. We also hold traditional circumcision and its always fun.
I have two kids and they are in lower primary school and they both want to be commercial farmers in future. In addition a niece who had dropped out of school because her polygamous father could not pay her school fees settled with me and i have been paying her fees and maintaining her now for three yaers.she is doing her certificate for primary examination this november.I always encourage them to work hard in school so that they can get the best life can give.
During my free time I always go herding my cattle, and cleaning the zero grazing unit.
I am a small scale dairy farmer, and I keep two dairy cattle namely Lando and Dibworo,I like the cattle and i call them by name.Land is lactating and so I provide my neighborhood with fresh milk, every morning.
I always sell my Milk at fair price and this gives me a competitive edge,I also make sure my milk is clean and does not add any water to make it more. This has gained me trust on my clients.I also allow clients to take milk on credit so that they can pay at the end of the month.
In a month I spend $50 on transport ,feeds and pesticides.my revenues in a good month is $300.I make an average of $220 in a good month.
I use the profits to pay school fees for my siblings and kids.
