About Me

My name is Benard . I am a kenyan citizen. I come from a family of two brothers and two sisters. I am the third born in our family. I am staying in Nakuru County at a place called Ponda mali. I completed my high school in the year 2007. In the 2008, I joined Kenyatta University and did a course in business management. I graduated in the year 2011 and in the year 2012; I decided to start a business of selling treated water to Ponda mali people and its environs. I decided on this business because there was shortage of clean treated water in this area. Ponda mali is like a slum area. It doesn’t have tap water. This has resulted into constant breakout of water borne disease such as diarrhoea, cholera, malaria, trachoma, typhoid and scabies. I manage to start this business with the money that I had borrowed from micro-finance. With this money I bought three storage water tanks. Today I am serving a good number of Ponda mali people with treated water but more still needs to be done in order to be able to eradicate water born diseases this area.

My Business

I am running a business of selling treated water. I have three selling water points which I managed to establish with the three water tanks that I bought. Each of my tanks holds 10,000litres of water. I normally source treated water from the municipal council of Nakuru then I sell it to the residents of Ponda Mali. A jerican of 20 litters of water goes for Ksh 20. My business is on high demand because I am the only person who sells treated water in this area. I am normally able to sell over 4,000 litres of water per day. Despite having three selling water points, I have not been able to cater for the demand of treated water that is required in this area; I am therefore appealing to Zidisha micro-finance to help me bring more treated water to this area. I would like to add more water tanks so that I can be able to sell to other parts of Ponda mali which has not yet been able to access treated water.

Loan Proposal

I take this opportunity once again to thank my lenders for the support that they have given me earlier. Once again, I am hereby applying for my second loan. My aim is to increase clean water supply in Ponda mali area. I would like to see water born diseases completely erected from Ponda mali. I am therefore going to use my loan to buy more water tanks with bigger capacities. I am also going to employ more people to work at this water points. This will increase supply of clean water in ponda mali which will lead to good health for the people.

Hello - how are things going for you now? Have you been able to work out your difficulty with non-paying customers?

I wish to reduce my weekly installments. Zidisha has really helped me to establish a business which has really helped a lot of poor people to get fresh water. My customers have been very good in terms of paying for the water they get from my tanks. However, recently I have had customers who are refusing to pay for the water after getting it . It has been hard for me to deny people fresh water whenever they don't money. They always promise to pay the later but every time I try to follow them, they still don't pay. I am therefore unable to pay my loan has I had promise. I am hereby requesting to be allowed to pay smaller amounts which I can afford at the moment.

I`m sorry that you are having trouble with non-paying customers, and I admire your compassion in continuing to provide them with clean water regardless. Unfortunately it sounds like you might have to switch your business to demanding at least partial payment before delivery in order to be able to expand further.

Thank-you for your continued repayments, despite your set back. How are things now? What were you able to do with the old leaking tank? Could anyone else use it?

Thanks Dockhlliday. The water tank is made of plastic material, I don't think It can be of any use to someone. I managed to buy one more new water tank with the loan that I received. I took the water tank to a primary school where there was water shortage. I will be filling this tank with water for the school and the
school will be paying me after every two weeks

It's good to know that the primary school children will now have safe water to drink while at their studies, and providing that tank there should also help promote your business further, as all the parents of the students will know about it. So, a win-win situation for everybody, the best kind!

I'm glad to learn that your business is improving, have you replaced your leaking tank?

  • Bernard    Apr 30, 2014

I wish to reschedule my loans because of the problem that I am experiencing right one. One of my oldest tank is leaking. This problem started two weeks ago. I had brought some technicians to try and seal the leaking points but its has not work. The leaks stops for sometime then after some few days it starts leaking again. I would therefore like to pay a new tank to replace the leaking tank. This will help me save the water that is going to waster through the leaks. I will resume paying my loan with better amounts once I solve this problem.

Thank-you for writing, Mr. Tangus. Unfortunately nothing lasts forever. What material are your tanks made of? Would it be possible in the future to purchase better quality tanks? Will you be able to sell the leaking tank for scrap? It makes sense that you purchase a replacement for the leaking tank right away, so there is no waste and you don't lose customers. I'm sure the other lenders will accept smaller repayments for a time, as I certaintly do. Thank-you again for making the time to explain the change in repayment plan.

I am now selling of litters of water on a daily basis. I have been able to make more profit and therefore wish to resume paying my loan at Ksh 1500.

I hereby wish to repay my loan in small instalments. I wish to buy an extra tank with the money that I get from my business of selling water. This is because the demand for my treated water has increased. I therefore wish to sell more water by buying an extra tank. This will enable me to sell more water and even increase my profit. thank you

I thank the Zidisha micro - finance for the loan that I received. This money with the savings that I had helped me to buy two more water tanks with capacities of 10,000 litters and also hired two more staffs. I now have two more water selling points. My selling has now increased resulting into more profit. For this reason, I wish to increase my remittance to Zidisha in order to clear my loan
